To webpage Enigma-Fanclub Wagner said in 2003 that the studio was «the most unusual» in his career. Over the next three years much equipment was moved from Michael’s old studio in Germany, and state-of-the-art technology was also implemented. He commissioned partners Gunter Wagner and Bernd Steber, who had over 20 years experience in designing and building high-end studios. Studio starts when Michael Cretu was to build a studio in his new home at Ibiza, Spain, in the late 1980s. How important is a studio to the finished product? It is hard to say something general, but for an Enigma album – which is not played live, and only exists as a digital recording – it is vital.

The studio is visible in this German TV interview from 1992 (seen from around 3 minutes or so): (I doubt that it has become better though…) It is just that the creation process that has become easier and more affordable. That said, technology itself will not make great art. Armed with a smart phone or basic laptop, you can record and mix in studio quality from any location. The technology is now light-years from where we were in 1990. When it comes to studio technology, there’s have been many Mars landings over the last few years.
